A Gulf contemporary: The forefront of international art
Art from the Gulf states sits at the forefront of contemporary art practices and markets. In this report, we identify the leaders in the fields of art and design, both in terms of institutions and individuals. We look within the region and beyond, unveiling the resounding impact that Gulf states have on art world policies and developments.
Looking back over the last 15 years to predict ahead, we have used this opportunity to highlight the forerunners in contemporary art within the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in particular. Similarly, we provide context and delineate the threads of grassroots activities that have laid the foundations for future generations of artists, designers and institutions. Whilst we identify international institutions and their impact, our focus is on Gulf-led and born entities – where the vernacular of the region is distilled and where the unique and radically different modes to those of the West are nurtured, celebrated and respected.
The report was written by Citizen Global, who have been based in the UAE since 2005. The intention was not to propose new ideas but more to create space to consider and take stock whilst also providing a broad point of reference for international audiences who may still be unaware of the strength of West Asia’s art scene.
We have drawn on a wide pool of advisors, focusing our attention on Gulf residents and nationals, with contributions from internationally acclaimed curators, writers and the wider Arab diaspora.
